Of shooting stars and Airplanes

Sometimes when I couldn't sleep at night, I used to quietly slip outside when everybody was asleep. But only very few times. Well, last night I did and It was such a relief. There's a magical feeling you get, when every living thing around you is asleep and there's only the light of the moon and the stars, and the backyard neighbors stupid garden lamp that they never turn off, to accompany you. Of course I held my puppy in my sweatshirt for awhile before she decided she was cold and wanted to sleep in the garage with her mommy.
I walked through my backyard, crunching the ice quietly with every step. I made sure I didn't turn on the motion light by walking around the yard not straight through it. I sat on the old frosty swing set and rocked myself slightly. I looked up at the stars and wondered what it was like to be in space.
I could feel my puppy squirming around in my sweatshirt; she had to go potty so I let her go. I hugged myself, rubbing my arms to warm me up. All I had on was light pink pajama bottoms, slipper boots, and my cheer sweatshirt, so it was a little chilly...also, it's in the middle of winter, and it was about 2 o'clock in the morning at the time.
The swing set is directly across from the house, in the way back of the yard, facing the house. So i stared at the old house, that was made in the fifties. Of course my dad re-modeled the back porch and the front porch. There was new paint, that was there when we first moved in about 8 years ago when I was in 2nd grade. I hate this house. It's old, not pretty, and I just don't like it. There's just a bad vibe here or something. Ever since we moved here my parents just don't get along at all, and nothing ever goes right for to long. If it does, I never expect it to last long.
I heard an airplane engine and looked up at the starry sky. I watched the plane way up there and whispered to myself, "That's me someday...flying away...somewhere new." And as the plane was half way out of my sight I heard a sort of zoom sound, not sure how to explain it, but for the first time in my whole life that I can remember...I saw a shooting star. My heart stopped, and I quickly made a wish. I would tell you what I wished for, but that's classified of course. I don't know why but tears came to my eyes and I laughed. It was a moment I shared with myself that I'll never forget.
I stayed out side quite a while longer; my swinging getting slower and slower until I almost fell asleep. I put down my hood and looked around the yard and behind me. I was suddenly scared for no apparent reason. I felt like there was somebody there, not really watching me but they were there.
I looked over at the weather beaten bench that sat underneath a small pine tree, and imagined a ghost sitting there. Totally a trick of the mind, and I of course watch to many scary movies. I sat still for a while, thinking, what if I get up and something tries to chase me? So stupid. I shook my head quickly, shaking off the thoughts and stood up. My backside was cold from the frosted swing.
I walked around the perimeter of the yard past the shed that was just built last summer, the ice cracking beneath my feet; making sure I didn't turn on the motion light. Instead of going through the living room sliding glass back door. I went though the garage door and cuddled the dogs a little while underneath the heating lamp.
Finally, I walked up the steps and into the door that leads to the kitchen. I quietly shut the door, thankful it was one of the few non-squeaky ones in the house. I quickly slipped off my slippers and tip-toed to my room. I threw my slippers on the floor, and I looked out the window to look at the swing set. I imagined myself swinging there. I could barely keep my eyes open so I tip-toed to my warm cozy bed and fell fast asleep.

It was the best sleep I've had in a long, long time.
